Macbook iSight camera is dead

I tried using built-in iSight of my Macbook and it doesn’t work anymore. It was working fine last week. I tried everything (SMC/PMU, volatile memory reset etc) to make sure if it’s software issue or hardware. It seems, it’s hardware issue. While searching online to learn more about it, I figured out that it’s kind of common problem among Macbook users. Some guys noticed this issue just after two days of buying Macbook. I don’t know what is problem but this is certainly bad design (loose wires, untaped wires or whatever).
There is no Apple authorized service center (for Macbook) in my city and not sure of quality of work done in near by cities (Mumbai). Bangalore is the only place I can think of now, but that’s gonna add at least $200 expense because I don’t think it can be fixed in one day so I need to go there two times. And taking time out of work is another problem. I don’t know when can I do it. Life is already full of To-dos, this one adds more.
Well this is frustrating, I bought something which is not even used by 10% of total computer users in India, hence lack of service centers. I am upset because I take care of my machines(stuff) and handle properly, still this happened.
You can understand the level of frustration from length of this post for such a small thing.

    Hi
Did you ever sort this problem out? I had the same frustration. Searched the web, tried every possible, sometimes drastic, solution. (This is how I came across your web page!) I finally just started to fiddle with random settings. This can be dangerous for someone who doesn’t no what they are doing!
I set my preferences for PhotoBooth (ctrl-click-Get Info) to “Open wih Rosetta”. I’m no computer whizz-kid, so I don’t even know what Rosetta does, but it worked, and reconnected my isight camera! After that, I deselected this option again, but isight still works. For me certainly, it just needed a “kick”, or something.
Hope you managed as well, it seems to be a common problem! If not, I hope this helps,
    Best wishes,
    Abdotzed

  • Hi,
Thanks for your comment. I also tried all possible tricks, even the trick you mentioned. It doesn’t work. I am sure, it’s hardware failure.
I went to one of Apple Centers in India, their tech guys suggested me to reinstall the OSX.. But I knew, it’s not going to work…because iSight doesn’t show up in system-profile (under USB devices).
This is kindda my primary development machine, so I am not able to give it for service, hope I would get it done before it’s one year warranty lapses :)
Thanks for info. It’s nice, it works for you now..

what would u do for a laptop?
cause i have the same problem

    • I tried to reset various settings as documented on Apple’s support website and other places on web. It didn’t help me in my case, I had to get isight replaced. Thankfully, my macbook was covered under warranty then.

Hold down the power button for about 30 seconds, put battery back in and start computer> That’s it!! Thanks Again!
