Docker Global Mentor Week 2016 – Kanpur

Docker Mentor Week 2016 - Kanpur

I have not been blogging quite often but you must have guessed from my posts that I love Docker. It’s beautiful piece of technology which comes with a lot of great tooling for developers, devops and infrastructure administrators.

I am Docker Kanpur Meetup Group organiser. We are organising Docker Global Mentor Week in Kanpur on November 18, 2016.

If you are from Kanpur or around (Lucknow, Unnao, etc.), please do join the meetup group, and participate in this and future events. It’s lot of learning, and fun to be at meetups.

For your convenience, I am embedding event information below even though it’s available on meetup page. RSVP is must, and we only have space for 20 people. Please confirm it on meetup page.

I look forward to meeting you at the event. Let’s make it fun and successful.

Join us for our Kanpur edition of the Docker Global Mentor Week!

Docker Global Mentor Week is your opportunity to #learndocker. Right now, Docker is working on self paced online labs that will be available through LearnDot. One lab will be for beginners and one lab will be for intermediate users. Docker mentors will be on hand at this event to help you as you work through the self paced materials.

Are you an advanced user? We strongly encourage Docker users of all skill levels to attend! We need a network of mentors who understand the Docker platform to answer any questions that newcomers may have. Click here to sign up as a mentor.

Agenda: November 18, 2016

  • 16:00 – Doors Open
  • 16:15 – Welcome message, presentation of Docker & snacks
  • 16:30 to 18:30 – Select and work through self-paced lab
  • 18:30 – Socializing

As we get closer to the event, we will share more information including materials on how to prepare for the training.

Pre-Event Set-up

At the training, you will need to bring your own computer. Before you go to a mentoring event, there are some steps you should do some preparation to get your work environment ready. This will help get ready for the tutorial, and also save on bandwidth at the event venue. Here are the steps:

Set-up Docker on your machine

For Linux users, we need you to install Docker engine and Docker compose. Make sure you have Docker compose version 1.6 or higher by running docker-compose version from the command prompt.

For Mac users, install Docker for Mac or if you have an older Mac, Docker Toolbox.

For Windows users, if you have Windows 10 pro install Docker for Windows, otherwise install Docker Toolbox.

If you are a Docker for Windows user and want to try the new Windows containers, you need to have fully updated your machine. To prepare to use Windows containers,

Go through the setup steps in the Windows Container lab.

In Powershell run
docker pull microsoft/windowsservercore:latest
This will take awhile, but it is essential you do this before going to the venue. The Windows base image is a 3 gig download.

If you’re new to Docker, pre-pull the docker images for the very basic tutorial
  • docker pull hello-world
  • docker pull alpine
  • docker pull seqvence/static-site
To run the application and participate in the rest of the training, pre-pull these images
  • docker pull microsoft/dotnet:1.0.0-preview1
  • docker pull node:5.11.0-slim
  • docker pull python:2.7-alpine
  • docker pull redis:alpine
  • docker pull postgres:9.4
For the orchestration part, you will want to pre-build the demo app by running the following steps
  • git clone git://github.com/jpetazzo/orchestration-workshop
  • cd orchestration-workshop/dockercoins
  • docker-compose build

TEDx in Kanpur – TEDxIITKanpur

Entrepreneurship Cell (E-Cell), at IIT Kanpur, is organising TEDxIITKanpur event on March 12, 2011. This is the first event of it’s kind, and I hope we would have more of those (TEDx, BarCamp, DevCamp, etc.) in Kanpur (within IITK campus or outside).

Our company (Allies Interactive Services) is honoured to contribute as design sponsor of TEDxIITKanpur, and hopefully other events organized by E-Cell, IIT Kanpur.

Adobe MAX 2010

Adobe MAX 2010 is indeed one of the best MAX events, I have noticed. I am probably the last one to write anything about this event, but couldn’t resist; Better late than never.

I am excited about upcoming Flash Player, which would have many things along with 3D API (GPU supported).

Adobe, it’s partners (device companies) and developer-community (pre-release, public) have worked hard to make sure Adobe AIR works smoothly across different devices (pc, mobile, tablet and even a TV).

Everyone has been talking about great stuff in HTML5 and CSS3 for last couple of years; It looks like, Adobe has also been doing a lot of work to bring tools and productivity for HTML5/CSS3 developers.

I am still checking out, what has happened during last two days and what is happening right this moment. However, I found following links very useful. Like me, if you missed being there (at MAX 2010), check out:

BTW! Don’t forget to watch the keynotes, I just finished watching Day-1 keynote (by Kevin Lynch), it’s awesome.

I consider myself as an optimist, I hope, I am going to be there next year :-)

Adobe Flash Platform Summit 2010

One more day to go for Adobe Flash Platform Summit 2010, I am very excited about this event because of so many good sessions and my team has been busy building some cool stuff using web-standards and lamp-stack.

If you are going to be around, let’s catch up.

BarCamp Kanpur

I still remember the day, when Jon Boutelle shared his idea of organizing first BarCamp in India (i.e. New Delhi) and wanted to know, if we (Manish Jethani and I) can connect him to someone at Adobe Noida for venue. Then the first BarCampBangalore, how idea started and how some of us met initially to plan, though I had to drop out just before event due to health reasons.

I must say, I have been fortunate to be part of some of the first events in India, be it Bangalore or Pune.

I really miss events like BarCamp in Kanpur, hence been planning to organize BarCampKanpur, if I can find more like-minded people and collaborate with them. Last year, I sent an email to couple of mailing-lists (including BarCampBangalore) to share the idea and request contacts, if any, who can help us.

Thanks to all those who sent me offline emails and shared the contacts from their connections. I tried to reach out couple of those but it didn’t work out. I couldn’t really follow up a lot.

Today, I decided to create wiki-page for BarCampKanpur and a google-group (mostly for mailing-list purpose for planners and volunteers). Following are the details:

I am very positive, we would soon have some volunteers to plan and organize the event. Venue should not be problem, I can manage to get one easily for first event and perhaps later.

Once we have some volunteers, we plan to have some meetup in local cafes or anywhere to talk about things (get to know each other, plan the event, share the responsibilities, etc).

Please spread the word and participate, if you can.

BugQuash

BugQuash is a great initiative to bring Flex community together to contribute in various ways (bug filing, fixing, patching, etc) to OpenSource Flex SDK.

I am sure, you must have heard about last BugQuash which was organized last month, by Flex community members: Nate Beck and Marty Mickelson.

Hundreds of community members participated including me.

I submitted some patches, which are not big ones, but I got a lot of appreciation from teams within Adobe and other people from community. It suggests that even small contributions matter, hence I should be contributing more often.

Dave Story (VP Developer Tools, Adobe Systems) sent some pictures from one of the all-hands meeting, where BugQuash was discussed, where entire team, along with Dave, thanked to each contributor for their contributions over phone.

Thanks to everyone who organized and participated. It helped me to get started contributing, which I always wanted to do. I am going to try to contribute as often as I can.

Update:Next BugQuash is happening on May 17, 2009. Check out BugQuash for more details.
Update: BugQuash on May 17, 2009 was successful and your truely submitted two patches :-)

initRIA was cool

It was good to be at initRIA, I met many (known or new) people. The event went fine, we had some good sessions. The following list was the agenda:-

  • Data Visualization in Flex – Raghunath Rao, Adobe
  • Flash for Flex developers – Bhavin Padhiyar, SAP
  • RIAjaxified – Rakshith, Adobe
  • Designing RIAs with RC pattern – Yash Mody, TeknoPoint Multimedia
  • Building Live Documents – An online Office suite leveraging RIA technologies by Sumanth Raghavendra and Adarsh Kini, InstaColl
  • Optimizing Flex and AS3 – Mrinal Wadhwa, SAP
  • Developing Flex RIAs with Cairngorm Microarchitecture Debabrata Acharjee, CapGemini
  • Birds of a feather

We had couple of more session and some discussions (on Silverlight, AJAX etc) along with the above listed ones. I enjoyed most of the session, there is always something to learn. The most interesting session was by InstaCol guys, who showed us Live-Documents and also shared their experience with Adobe Flex.

I hope, all the slides/presentations (by everyone) would be uploaded to slideshare (preferably) or somewhere.

Around 130+ people were expected to attend (based on registration count) but it seems some fifty people showed up, which is not bad for something that was planned and organized in such a short time-span.

I feel, this is the first event, in India, which is focussed on the Flash Platform at the same time open for talks/discussions on all kind of RIA technologies. I am sure, next time (whenever it happens) we would have enough time to spread the word and developers from different RIA technology background can come up and share their views. As said, it was cool we had discussions on AJAX, Silverlight, AIR, Flex, Flash and RIA in general.

I managed to click some photographs, not really good quality due to my impatient and lazy nature since I have moved to Bangalore :-).Check out photographs.

Thanks to Mrinal Wadhwa of Bangalore FUG for taking the initiative and organizing the event. Thanks to Honeywell guys for a good venue with all facilities.
